Why are your web card pages so small; wouldn’t a bigger page size give more information?
It would indeed but that might not be a good idea. Out on the Web, there are hundreds of different computer systems and what appears on your screen may be quite different to what someone else is seeing. On a very large screen, our web cards may only take up about 1/3 of total display area but on a small laptop one of our pages could fill the entire screen.
Why don’t you use more graphics and decorative effects; your pages seem very plain compared to other business sites?
“People come looking for information, not entertainment,” is a well-
The rule of thumb is: if you use business cards or word of mouth to spread your message,
you can benefit from having a website. People are using the Web more and more to
find what they are looking for. Even well-
It is much more convenient to type search words into Google or Yahoo and check out the returns than it is to wade through pages of print.
I don’t operate a large business and I have don’t have much to offer the public. In fact, I can only deal with people in my own locality. Can a website be of any use to me?
But my little site is hardly going to turn up in a Google search, is it?
Unfortunately, that is very true. Unless you have the money to launch major promotion campaigns, this is not going to happen.
But I’ve just been on a website that tells me I can create a website of my own and get great results from the big search companies if I use their services; what do you say to that?
In a word, rubbish! If it were that easy, wouldn’t billions be doing exactly the same thing?
If you know next to nothing about websafe fonts and colours or never even heard of meta tags and the likes, you site may not be readable on other peoples’ computer systems. Remember that what you see on your screen may not be what others will see on their ones.
Certainly, companies like these will host your site, for a fee, and submit it to Google and co. for indexing but that is not the full story.
What else is there to know? I know a person who has such a site and when the keywords are typed in, this site comes close to the very top of a Google search return; what’s wrong with that?
Nothing; if very specific keywords are used. How many strangers are likely to use keywords that will match exactly the ones that are inserted carefully into your site? What if keywords are not included at all? If your sited is indexed, it will be placed on the big Search Databases and will be included in the returns alright. That is likely to be hundreds of places away from the top. Fortunately, there are other effective ways to get noticed.
What do you mean?
Google & Co. never divulge the exact formulas (algorithms) they used to determine rankings in their return pages. This is done to prevent attempts to manipulate the returns.
However, it is known that they have three major criteria; matching keywords entered in searches with those to be found on a particular site is only one of those considerations and it is not the most important one anymore. It is important to have as many other sites as possible linking to a site in question and they search reputable business directories and other resource sites first.
What does all this mean to me?
Several things. Having a site that is search engine friendly and that complies with web design standards is a good thing but on its own is not likely to be of practical benefit to you. But there is another way to improve on this that is neither expensive or hard to achieve.
This sounds promising; what have you in mind?
This may take some time to but is very effective and after the initial labour involved, is easy to update and maintain. The method is discussed under “Promotion.”
It involves getting listed in a series of business directories, classified ad sites and other ones that are organised by category. The ones to especially look for are those who are returned in a high place in search engine queries and that allow you to insert a hyperlink back to your own site. Those that ask you to list your ad under a regional heading can also be useful for directing your advertising to a particular region.
Remember that nobody can guarantee you business success when you advertise in any way but if you follow the guidelines suggested here, the chances of increasing the numbers of interested visitors to your site are pretty good.
